Usually during the summer months for the past 4 years I have offerred a series of natural dye days. One day is for dyeing yellow: Fustic and Osage Orange are mainly used, but some years we have used Tansy and Marigolds. The second day is for dyeing reds: Cochineal , Lac and Madder are the three reds used this day. We sometimes try to shift the ph by using afterbaths of vinegar or washing soda. The last day is Blue day: using Indigo vats we overdye some of the yellows to get greens, we overdye the cochineals to get purple and then dye natural whites or greys to get shades of blue. As you can see from the photos we have lots of fun. I have chosen the ancient dyes to use because they are most colourfast. I have Natural Dye Days planned for 2009–just check out the Classes and Workshop headings on my web site.
