Val Kohler

With fleece in my hand, a passion to discover the pre-historic methods of “How did we make it”, and having a small flock of sheep come to live next door, put the materials of our earliest clothing close enough to make it imperative that I begin a journey to find out.

My spinning and knitting for years has lead to a study of weaving and the realm of the hand-made.

The warm summer sun at my back while sitting on the front porch surrounded by clean and combed locks of fleece, the relaxing and contemplative activity of spinning the fleece into a long continuous thread that whispers what it might like to be made into, the quiet hum of the wheel, a rhythmic and steady whir as my feet make a dance on the treadle, and the quiet swish of tiny feet moving silently into the patch of field not 20 feet away from my work, catch my attention as. My neighbours, the sheep, settle under a shady bit near the fence, content in having their heavy winter coats shorn off and are busy in their work of starting next year’s glorious gift. I too work on a “gift”. My fleece will, before it is completely spun, tell me what it wants to be made into and I will go to my loom or my knitting needles, and wisk the bits and pieces into their places of work and between us we will complete something useful, warm and sometimes beautiful.
