Tapestry Weaving Classes and Workshops
Workshops and Classes offered in 2012:
April 21 and 22, 2012: “Colour Exercises for Fibre Artists” sponsored by the Midnight Shuttles, Campbell River, BC.
May 22, 23, 24, and 25, 2012: “Learn to Weave Tapestry” . This workshop is for beginners or those who are wishing to improve their skills. Each participant will weave a narrow sampler exploring slits and joins; lines; diagonals; and other shapes as well as colour. Copper pipe looms will be provided for students during class, as well as warp and weft materials. Cost: $175.00 plus HST. This will be held at the Bradley Centre, Coombs, BC.
June 12, 13, 14 and 15, 2012: “Tapestry Weaving: Inspired by Nature”. Using nature as our inspiration, each student will design and weave a small tapestry. Students will bring objects from nature, photographs from nature, or their personal sketch book or journal for inspiration. They will be guided to prepare a cartoon, choose colours and yarns for their designs. Copper pipe looms will be provided or students may choose to bring their own looms. Warp and weft yarns will be provided. Cost: $175.00 plus HST. Place: Bradley Centre, Coombs, BC. Times: 10 to 4 pm.
July 10 – 13, 2012: “Tapestry Weaving Inspired by the Zapotec Rug Weavers in Oaxaca, Mexico”. Students will weave a small sampler using the motifs found in the ruins in Mitla and Monte Alban, Oaxaca as inspiration. Warp and weft materials will be provided. Each day image presentations will show the woven lives of the people of the region. Come and learn to weave tapestry or increase your tapestry skills and celebrate these wonderful textiles. Copper pipe looms will be provided for those who do not already have looms. Cost: $200.00 plus HST. Place: Bradley Centre, Coombs, BC. Times: 10- 4 pm each day.
August 14 and 15th, 2012: “Natural Dye Days”. Bring your own wool yarns and dye a rainbow of colours. Instruction will include preparation of the dyes, how the dyes work, where to get dyes, etc. Each person will need to bring 24 – one ounce skeins of wool, or alpaca, or silk. Cost: $100.00 plus HST for 2 days. Place: Elaine’s home in Errington. Times: start at 10 am, end???
August 21 and 22, 2012: “Indigo Dye Days”. Bring natural cloth and prepare to dye using shibori techniques. The first day the cloth will be prepared by stitching, folding, wrapping, etc. The second day the cloth will be dyed in indigo baths. Cost: $100 plus HST for 2 days. Place: Elaine’s home in Errington. Each day will start at 10 am.
September 25, 26, 27 and 28, 2012: “Tapestry Weaving: Exploring materiality to express your ideas in tapestry”. Each student will weave a sampler or small tapestry using wools, cottons, silks, linens, textured yarns, and shiny yarns to imitate feelings in tapestry. Warp and weft yarns will be provided, as well as copper pipe looms for use in class. Cost: $200.00 plus HST. Place: Bradley Centre, Coombs, BC. Times: 10 am to 4 pm.
October 23, 24, 25, and 26, 2012: “Tapestry Weaving: Not for Beginners Only”. This course is for those who already know how to weave tapestry but would like individualized instruction for furthering their skills. Each person will bring their own ideas for a tapestry to be woven, or a tapestry in progress that they would like help with. Each person will supply their own warp and weft materials. Cost: $175.00 plus HST. Place: Bradley Centre, Coombs, BC. Times: 10 am to 4 pm daily.
